2027 Total Solar Eclipse Duration: How Long Will Totality Last in Egypt?

October 24, 2026 / VIP Tours Egypt Team

On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross Egypt, giving travellers a rare chance to experience several minutes of darkness in the middle of the day. But not every destination will see the same event. Some places will experience totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun, while others will see only a partial eclipse.

For most travellers, Luxor is the strongest all-round choice. It combines more than six minutes of totality with convenient accommodation, Nile cruises and some of Egypt’s most famous ancient sites. Other locations, including Edfu, Kom Ombo and parts of the Red Sea coast, offer different ways to experience the eclipse.

This guide compares the best places to see the 2027 solar eclipse in Egypt, including eclipse duration, access, accommodation and nearby attractions, to help you plan your trip.

Where Will the 2027 Solar Eclipse Cross Egypt?

The total solar eclipse path will cross parts of Egypt on Monday, 2 August 2027. It includes locations in the Nile Valley, the Luxor area and parts of the Red Sea coast, as well as Siwa Oasis in the northwest.

Luxor lies close to the centre of the path. The city will experience approximately 6 minutes and 22 seconds of totality, while the longest duration along the path will be about 6 minutes and 23 seconds near the point of greatest eclipse.

Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel lie outside the path of totality. Visitors in these destinations will see a partial eclipse rather than the complete disappearance of the Sun.

Total vs. Partial Eclipse: Why Your Location Matters

A partial eclipse and a total solar eclipse are very different experiences.

During a partial eclipse, the Moon covers only part of the Sun. Even if the coverage reaches 99.8%, a small part of the solar disc remains visible, and the sky does not experience the same sudden darkness as it does during totality.

During totality, the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright disc. The sky darkens dramatically, the solar corona becomes visible, and the surrounding landscape can take on an unusual twilight appearance.

This distinction matters when choosing your destination. Aswan experiences a partial eclipse of approximately 99.8%, while Cairo sees roughly 95% coverage. Both cities are excellent places to visit, but neither offers the total eclipse visible from Luxor and other locations inside the path.

Important: Never look directly at the Sun without suitable solar-viewing protection during the partial phases. Use undamaged eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard. Looking without a filter is safe only during the brief period of complete totality, and protection must be put back on as soon as totality ends.

1. Luxor: The Best All-Round Place to See the 2027 Eclipse

Luxor is the leading choice for travellers who want a long total eclipse alongside Egypt’s ancient monuments and established tourist infrastructure.

How long will totality last in Luxor?

The total solar eclipse in Luxor will last approximately 6 minutes and 22 seconds. Totality is expected to begin at about 1:02 pm local time, reach its maximum around 1:05 pm and end near 1:08 pm on 2 August 2027.

The partial eclipse begins at approximately 11:40 am and ends around 2:26 pm. These are predicted local times for Luxor; the exact times can vary slightly by viewing location.

The Sun will be high in the sky, at approximately 82 degrees above the horizon near maximum eclipse. Choose an open viewing area with a clear view of the sky rather than relying on a distant horizon.

Why choose Luxor?

Luxor combines a long period of totality with a range of accommodation, transport and sightseeing options.

The city has an airport, rail connections and hotels across several price ranges. Visitors can also arrange guided excursions to the East and West Banks of the Nile, subject to access arrangements and local conditions on eclipse day.

Major attractions include Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut. You can plan your sightseeing before or after the eclipse rather than trying to fit everything into the same afternoon.

Explore our Luxor destination page for local travel options. If you have limited time, our guide to one day in Luxor can help you plan your sightseeing.

Where should you watch from in Luxor?

Look for an open rooftop, a suitable hotel garden or another confirmed viewing area with an unobstructed view of the sky. A Nile cruise sun deck may also work, provided the vessel’s location and viewing arrangements are confirmed in advance.

Do not assume that every temple courtyard, hotel rooftop or cruise deck will be accessible for eclipse viewing. Confirm access, crowd management and any special arrangements directly with your accommodation or tour operator.

2. Edfu and Kom Ombo: Watching the Eclipse Along the Nile

Edfu and Kom Ombo offer alternatives for travellers who want to combine the eclipse with a Nile cruise.

Both temple towns lie within the path of totality, although the duration differs by location. Edfu can experience approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds of totality, while Kom Ombo receives a shorter period of roughly 3 minutes and 40 seconds.

Their main attraction is the opportunity to combine river travel with visits to important ancient sites. Edfu is known for the Temple of Horus, while Kom Ombo is home to the distinctive double temple dedicated to Sobek and Haroeris.

However, a Nile cruise requires careful planning on eclipse day. Ships move between destinations, and the location of the vessel at the time of totality determines what passengers will see.

Before booking, ask the operator where the ship is expected to be during totality, whether passengers will have access to an open viewing deck and what happens if the sailing schedule changes.

VIP Tours Egypt currently offers two eclipse cruise options:

Check the itinerary and confirm the precise viewing arrangements with our team before paying a deposit.

3. The Red Sea Coast: Marsa Alam, Port Ghalib and Quseir

The Red Sea coast is worth considering if you want to combine the eclipse with a beach holiday, diving or time at a resort.

However, the duration of totality varies significantly along the coast. Published estimates indicate approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds at Marsa Alam, 4 minutes and 33 seconds at Port Ghalib, and around 2 minutes and 30 seconds at Quseir.

These figures are location-specific estimates, so verify the exact duration for your hotel or intended viewing site before booking.

Is Hurghada a good place to watch the eclipse?

Hurghada is outside the path of totality. Travellers staying there will see a partial eclipse unless they travel to a location inside the path.

A transfer to Quseir or farther south may be possible, but travelling on the morning of the eclipse introduces unnecessary risk. Traffic, road delays and limited access to suitable viewing areas could affect your plans.

If you want a Red Sea holiday, consider staying farther south and arriving at your viewing location well in advance. Our Hurghada destination page is useful for planning the beach portion of a wider Egypt itinerary.

4. Siwa Oasis: A Desert Alternative

Siwa Oasis is another option for travellers interested in a quieter desert setting rather than a major tourist city.

The oasis lies inside the path of totality and is expected to experience around 5 minutes and 30 seconds of totality. Its desert landscapes and distinctive local culture offer a different setting from the Nile Valley.

The trade-off is accessibility. Siwa is a long journey from Cairo and other major tourist hubs, and its accommodation and transport options are more limited than those in Luxor.

If you choose Siwa, allow enough time to arrive before eclipse day and confirm accommodation, transport and the suitability of your viewing location well in advance.

5. Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel: Partial Eclipse and Sightseeing

Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel are outstanding destinations for an Egypt holiday, but they are not suitable if your main objective is to experience totality at your location.

Cairo will see a partial eclipse of roughly 95%. Visitors can still explore the Giza Pyramids, museums and historic neighbourhoods, but the Sun will not be completely covered.

Aswan will experience a very deep partial eclipse, with approximately 99.8% coverage. Its attractions include Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Nile waterfront. See our Aswan destination guide for sightseeing ideas.

Abu Simbel will also see a partial eclipse rather than totality. Its monumental temples make it a worthwhile addition to an itinerary, but travellers who want the full eclipse should plan to reach a location inside the path.

For a multi-city trip, consider visiting Cairo and Aswan before travelling to Luxor, and arrive at your eclipse viewing base at least one full day ahead of 2 August.

How Many Days Should You Plan for the Eclipse?

Your ideal trip length depends on whether you want to visit one destination or explore several parts of Egypt.

Three days in Luxor: Arrive before eclipse day, allow time for the event, and reserve another day for major temples and tombs.

Four to five days with a Nile cruise: Combine Luxor with Edfu, Kom Ombo and other scheduled stops, subject to the confirmed itinerary.

Seven to ten days across Egypt: Visit Cairo first, continue south to Luxor and Aswan, and build in a buffer before the eclipse.

Whatever route you choose, avoid arriving in your viewing city on the morning of 2 August. A delayed flight or road transfer could put your plans at risk.

If you are considering a Nile cruise, read our guide to how many days you need for a Nile cruise before deciding how to structure the trip.

Heat, Weather and Eye Safety

Early August in Upper Egypt is extremely hot, and daytime temperatures can exceed 40°C. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the early morning, drink water regularly and choose a viewing site with access to shade before and after totality.

Historical weather patterns suggest generally dry conditions in the region, but clear skies are never guaranteed. Dust, haze and unexpected weather can affect visibility.

Bring certified eclipse glasses for every person in your group. Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient for viewing the partial phases of a solar eclipse.

Arrive at your viewing site early, follow local instructions and avoid last-minute transfers between viewing locations.

Book Accommodation and Eclipse Tours Early

The eclipse is expected to attract visitors to Luxor and other locations along the path of totality. Accommodation, guided excursions and cruise cabins may become harder to secure as the date approaches.
